Understand the working context
The two values have different audiences and uses. A salesperson preparing an offer needs the agreed selling price and the context behind it. Administrators may also need cost information for internal review. Do not assume that updating a cost should automatically update a customer’s price. A separate price-management process makes it easier to review the commercial impact and respect existing agreements. If margins are reviewed, confirm the basis and currency used in the calculation.
Put it into practice
- Keep cost and selling-price fields clearly labelled.
- Limit private cost information to the appropriate role.
- Review price-list entries independently of catalogue edits.
- Preview changes before altering broad customer pricing.
A practical example
A supplier changes the cost of a product. The administrator updates the private cost record, then separately considers whether to revise a shared selling-price list. A customer with a fixed agreed price may need a different decision from a customer receiving a standard percentage discount.
In the current workspace
Atlas restricts cost fields to administrators and stores selling prices in price-list entries. Catalogue bulk additions retain independent selling-price entries; cost edits do not imply a universal customer-price change.
