Understand the working context

Not every enquiry needs to become a sales opportunity immediately. A prospect may still be exploring options, asking for information or reaching the wrong team. A useful qualification process captures enough context for a colleague to continue the conversation. It should explain why an enquiry is progressing or being closed, rather than relying on a status label alone. Define your criteria around your own sales process and the products or services you offer.

Put it into practice

  • Record what the person is trying to achieve.
  • Confirm the organisation and appropriate contact details.
  • Agree who owns the follow-up and when it should happen.
  • Create an opportunity when there is a defined piece of potential business.

A practical example

An enquiry asks about a product range but gives no quantities or timing. The lead owner records the interest and arranges a call. After confirming the likely order and customer details, the team can move into an opportunity with a meaningful description. Keeping the earlier notes helps the next colleague avoid asking the same questions again.
